People naturally get excited by the sizzle generated by TNKR. North Korean refugees writing books, giving speeches, or being featured in various media. It is inspirational and attracts some volunteers to join TNKR.
We are constantly told that we need to market this better. I agree with the people saying it, and encourage them to develop a marketing plan.
Such public refugees are the sizzle of TNKR. However, the steak of TNKR remains tutoring refugees 1:1. That can also be exciting because there are some refugees who can speak at a high level, and those tutors selected by them seem to have hit the lottery.
Such refugees are still the exception. There are many more refugees who are learning the basics, trying to improve their English enough so they can survive their English classes, improving their English enough to graduate from college, or refugees who need English to survive the workplace.
They are the volunteer tutors who help TNKR's Track 1 program survive. Such tutors agree to tutor North Korean refugees at least twice a month for 90 minutes each session.
Our next recruitment session for volunteer tutors will be on November 11 from 2 pm.
