TNKR will be hosting its 97th Language Matching session later today, starting at 2 p.m. We tell refugees not to arrive before 9 a.m. TNKR co-founder Eunkoo Lee tells them this in Korean.

What time did the earliest of early birds arrive this morning?

* 8:45 a.m.
* 8:55 a.m.
* 9:02 a.m.
* 9:03 a.m.

Of course, the fourth student to arrive was quite surprised.

I really wish I could take Eunkoo Lee in a time machine back to the days when she thought refugees were too passive to choose for themselves.

Even though she tells them not to arrive before 9 a.m., clearly they aren't getting the message! Because she tells them not to arrive before 9 a.m., I will let her figure out about the selection order when she arrives later.

I am not sure what will happen in the Matching session, Eunkoo informed us a few days ago that the refugees didn't show the eagerness that refugees had in recent orientation sessions. Perhaps they had on their poker faces during the orientation, and were planning all along to show up really early.

Get rid of that watermelon!

Part 1: When I was a youngster I used to collect Confederate money, posters and photographs with caricatures of blacks, and "No blacks allowed signs." I loved the money because it was a reminder of how far the sorry Confederacy had fallen. I had one poster of a dark-skinned black boy munching on a watermelon. I tend not to address points raised by people commenting on posts. In the back-and-forth of such discussions, people sometimes say things they don't mean or take extreme positions. In other cases they are just trying to be provocative, especially when they can remain anonymous. But a discussion on Greg Mankiw's blog caught my attention. That's because a couple of the folks suggested that parents don't really have the knowledge to make decisions about the quality of schools. Between 2002-2004 I was actively involved in the fight to get school vouchers for families in DC.
